View Full Version : Good news and Bad news

Well I will start with the good news first :D ............................

We have decided that we are going to go away :D

Chris had a few provisos, which I have agreed to

I've had to change our dates slightly because Chris would only agree to it if we could upgrade to upper class. It has only cost me an extra 60 and miles so it's not bad, we are flying UC for just over 500  He was really concerned about someone reclining on me, so he is happy about that now.

I have agreed to not insist on spending all day at the parks, I will take a stick with me and take things at a slow pace. If, it is all too much then I have said I will use an ecv, but I think if I am not silly and don't try to walk around say World Showcase in one go  I will be OK :fingers:

Now onto the bad news :sigh:.......

The consultant has said that basically my knee is shot and it needs replacing. He said that because it is so bad, even though I would normally be too young for a replacement, I would be eligible for one :(

He was very good, he explained all the reasons why, if I can, it would be better for me to hold on for as long as I can. He said that when an older person has a replacement it is normally successful and they are happy. When a younger person has a replacement, they are often disappointed because their expectations are greater.

So, I have to have surgery when we get home :( it will be for an arthroscopy so that he can see whether the outside of my knee would support a partial replacement or whether it would be a full replacement. He said that he will also flush the knee through and tidy things up if he can. I have been told not to expect too much from it, hopefully he will be able to ease things slightly, but he said he can't guarantee it.

He wasn't keen on giving me a steroid injection because he said that it can lead to an infection, more than likely wouldn't but if I am desperate then he would be prepared to try one a week before we go away. One thing he did say though, was that if I have the jab, then he wouldn't do the op for 2 - 3 months afterwards. So if I can, I am going to try and avoid having one :fingers:

There you have it, I have lots of things to organise, I've changed the things I can, but I have lots and lots to book.

Hey....................... I'm going on holiday :D :207: :207: :D

Wendy,

Good news!

Don't worry too much about the knee thing. According to my orthopedic surgeon, my knee's shot also and needs replacing. However, as you're probably aware, that's not stopping me from going to WDW.

In fact, I'll see you at MNSHHP! Dinner's at 6:45 PM.

We're going to be there 9/18 through 9/24. We're meeting up with Terry and Sue on the 22nd for MNSSHP. Originally, Wendy and Chris were going to join us but Terry's informed me that they had to change those dates so that's not going to work out like we'd planned.

No worries however. At least they're getting to go!

Tom (:macwave:... maybe I scheduled the wrong dates. Seduced by free dining!)

Excellent news Wendy. Sorry about having to have a operation. i guess the doctors think its for the best as they are reluctant to do this type of operation on younger people.

:wave:Hurrah for the trip, for the other. I know they try to put off doing the replacement in younger people because the results last 7 -10 years and usually another replacement is called for. This leads up to a build up of scar tissue and in a young person in their 30's you might expect to have 3-4 surgeries then. Have they suggested any swimming for therapy?

I'm 45 and he still thinks I'm a bit young :D it's the nicest things anyone has said to me for ages

He didn't suggest swimming, and he said that therapy is no use, all it will do is ease my knee if it locks but that's about it.

I'm hoping I can get some swimming done whilst we are away  I know I need to lose weight and I have lost 35lbs so far :D so I am determined to carry on

You know Deb, that's exactly what Chris has said  he says he can go to some of the places he's wanted to go this time because I always say "it's only a half day's trip" or some other excuse

I can only take so much fussing, I prefer to be the one looking after people not the other way round :rolleyes008:

I took down the timer because I didn't think we would be going and it depressed me :anxious:

The op that I will have when we get back from holiday probably won't make me pain free, but :fingers: it might help a little. I think the first op is mainly so he can investigate as well as tidy up anything he can

I was talking to Pat yesterday and she said my Dad was always a lot better when he was on holiday, she doesn't know if it was the warm weather but he was able to do a lot more than he could at home.

When I told Chris the first thing he said was "before you ask, we are not moving to Florida"  that man knows me too well

Glad you have your dates sorted--including the preliminary operation. Yes, I read your other thread!

Seriously, if you have any difficulties getting around, rent an ECV off site to use any place you choose! They deliver and pick up, and tend to be less expensive than daily rentals in the parks. When I'm injured, I find getting into the parks every bit as exhausting as touring the parks! That's a long walk from the bus/tram/monorail stations to the actual park entrances when you have foot/leg issues!
