Orlando International (MCO) first to get immigration kiosks

The kiosks are there to process passengers through immigration, as an alternative to being processed by a CBP agent

If there is any involvement...

The kiosks are there to process passengers through immigration, as an alternative to being processed by a CBP agent

If there is any involvement by a CBP officer, it will be to assist kiosk use to keep traffic flowing, not to duplicate what the kiosk is doing, although assistance is more likely to be provided by the airport’s own multi-lingual Airport Ambassador staff

The whole concept is to speed up immigration. Due to federal cutbacks it is very difficult to get additional CBP staff allocated to any U.S. airport, therefore the way to speed up processing is to introduce technology to do what the CBP officers do, hence the kiosks. The kiosks will significantly increase the effective processing capacity of the Immigration facilities at MCO.

The expected processing time for an experienced user will be about 60 seconds. Obviously first-timers may be slower than that; however, it is anticipated to be faster than processing by a CBP officer, and even if it is not, it will still increase the overall processing capacity of the Immigration facilities – it will be like having more CBP desks open in the Immigration hall, but some of them will be automated rather than human.

There will be no charge to use the immigration kiosk

The kiosks will initially only be available in English

The kiosk will be available for passengers of all ages

The kiosk will be available for passengers from all visa waiver countries and U.S. citizens (although it will be targeted towards non-U.S. residents as that is where the processing delays typically occur. This will make MCO the first airport to have such technology for non-U.S. citizens)

The kiosk will scan your passport (whether or not it has an embedded chip), take your photo (to compare against the photo in the passport and (if applicable) the photo stored in the chip in the passport), and take your fingerprints.

After completing the above and responding to the questions on the touchscreen, a receipt will be printed for the passenger

The passenger will then proceed to baggage claim before clearing Customs.

The kiosks will be in place and ready for use by July 1; however, we are still waiting for Customs and Border Protection to sign off on the start date.

5/17/2013 - New Self-Service Technology Initiative Program Will Streamline International Passenger Processing at Orlando International Airport

ORLANDO, FL. – The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority Board approved at its May meeting the implementation of a new initiative program self-service Automated Passport Control (APC) system. Orlando International Airport will be the first airport in the nation to test the self-service kiosks to expedite the international arrival process and reduce passenger processing times with Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The new system is expected to be in place by this summer.

The self-service kiosk technology will partially automate the inspection process for non-U.S. citizens entering the United States. Later this year, the program will expand in Orlando to add U.S. citizens as well. According to Customs and Border Protection, the primary objective of the technology is to increase the productivity of its resources by moving much of the mundane but necessary data collection duties to the passenger while they wait in queue. The self-processing kiosks will collect the passengers’ passport and flight information, declaration data, scan fingerprints, take a photo and issue a receipt to the passenger. The passenger then brings their passport and receipt to a CBP officer for verification. This program does not require passengers to register in advance. It will be available to all international passengers arriving at Orlando International Airport.

“With the forecast rate of international growth at Orlando International prompted by regional business expansion the addition of services and processes that improve the arrival experience for our travelers is welcomed. It benefits our airport and has proven to have a major economic impact on the businesses that serve Central Florida,” says Frank Kruppenbacher, Chairman of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority.

As a Model Port (port of entry) designated by the United States Customs and Border Protection, Orlando International Airport continues its goal to introduce the latest high technology to process international passenger arrivals quicker and more efficiently.

In April, Orlando International became the first airport in the nation to collaborate with the CBP to automate the I-94 documentation for entry into the United States. The introduction of that program has also helped to reduce wait times and streamline the arrival process for international passengers.

“Orlando International Airport has long been a receptive participant in testing and implementing various forms of new technology to enhance and improve processes especially in the areas of safety and security. This new kiosk system is a logical step for us to explore as we continue to grow our international business and look for ways to enhance “The Orlando Experience,”® says Phil Brown, Executive Director of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority.

The self-service kiosks are being developed for the Authority by SITA a leading specialist in air transport communications and information technology.

Orlando International processed a record 3.7 million international passengers in 2012 and so far this year is recording double-digit growth of 10.8 percent.

We will be using this for the first time next year. Previous visits we have hired a car, however as we will only be visiting Universal twice on our visit we feel it cheaper to hire a taxi on those occations rather than the increasing cost of hiring a car.

It means the responsibility doesn't fall onto me as I am the only one who will driver over there!

Anyway, how does this work in terms of dropping people off. Do they go to the delux resorts first and work the way down?

Or does it depend on the amount of people calling at each resort?

I was also told they will take our luggage to our room rather than us carrying it from the coach. Is this correct?

Any tips or suggestions regarding the Magical Express?

Although it’s still under construction, Senses – A Disney Spa at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort is accepting reservations as of today for treatments beginning July 25.

The theme of this spa is clearly the serenity of nature and it is evident at every turn. Branch-like fixtures and soft amber lighting along with a trickling waterfall built into a rock wall create a tranquil mood and inviting welcome. Native American artwork will adorn the walls of the two-story spa featuring 10 treatment rooms, a co-ed relaxation room and two lounges. A gorgeous mosaic tile mural imbedded with hummingbirds and trees is the centerpiece of the whirlpool and steam rooms. The heated loungers are pretty fabulous too!

This Senses spa carries on the theme of sister spa Senses – A Disney Spa at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort that opened in December, with relax, renew or imagine – each of which will create a custom experience.

<a href="http://wdisneysecrets.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=15478&d=1371552152" title="Name: walt-disney.jpg

Sunday, June 23, will mark the 50th anniversary of the premiere of Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, the world’s first Audio-Animatronics show and a place where the birds sing words and flowers croon with guests at the Disneyland Resort.

Part of the magic of Adventureland, the Enchanted Tiki Room transports guests to the Seven Seas, celebrating island romance and wonder performed in a theater-in-the-round. A chorus of four colorful macaws sings and orchestrates the show as guests laugh, clap and sing along.

Inspiration for the Tiki Room came from Walt Disney’s earliest days of animated filmmaking, as he looked for a way to animate in three dimensions. He was fascinated by an antique, miniature mechanical songbird that he had purchased in New Orleans and thought if someone could animate this figure a century before, it should be possible to do it using modern technology.

The resulting Audio-Animatronics technology developed for the Enchanted Tiki Room would eventually lead to such iconic Disney theme park attractions as “Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln,” “it’s a small world,” Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion and others.

Some interesting facts about the historic Enchanted Tiki Room:

The cast of the Enchanted Tiki Room show features 225 animated singing birds, flowers and Tikis.

Eight macaws, six cockatoos, twelve toucans and nearly 30 other tropical birds join more than 50 orchids, seven bird-of-paradise flowers,12 Tiki Drummers and singing Tikis in the magical, musical show.

The Enchanted Tiki Room originally was the Adventureland seating area for the Plaza Pavilion restaurant, now the Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe. From 1955 to 1961, Plaza Pavilion seating occupied both Main Street, U.S.A., and Adventureland and the restaurant incorporated themes from both lands in its design. Part of the Adventureland dining area for Plaza Pavilion was also converted into the Tahitian Terrace restaurant, now Aladdin’s Oasis.

During the planning stages, the Enchanted Tiki Room itself was conceived as a restaurant with the birds, flowers and Tikis performing an after-dinner show. There was even going to be a “birthday bird” that would be rolled out on a cart to sing for guests celebrating birthdays. After evaluating the challenges of combining the show with a restaurant operation, it was decided to make the Tiki Room a show only.

When the Enchanted Tiki Room premiered in 1963, not even an E-ticket could get you in. The attraction had its own special tickets, priced at 75 cents apiece.

“The Tiki Tiki Tiki Room” theme was composed by the Sherman Brothers, Richard and Robert, whose many Disney music credits include the Annette Funicello top ten hit “Tall Paul,” the “it’s a small world” theme and the Academy Award-winning score for “Mary Poppins.”

The Tiki Room show’s four hosts – Jose, Michael, Pierre and Fritz – were referred to as “MacAudios” in early publicity.
Jose is voiced by Disney legend Wally Boag, who performed at the Golden Horseshoe Revue. Michael is voiced by Irish tenor Fulton Burley, also of the Golden Horseshoe Revue. The voice of Pierre is Ernie Newton, who also created the voice of the singing knight in the Haunted Mansion. Deep-voice Thurl Ravenscroft voices both Fritz and, in The Enchanted Garden waiting area outside the Tiki Room, the Tiki god Tangaroa. Outside of the Disney theme parks, Ravenscroft is known as the voice of Tony the Tiger.

The Tikis in the Enchanted Tiki Garden entry area to the Tiki Room represent gods and goddesses for various Pacific Island cultures, including:

In 2005, Imagineers pulled the original audio source tapes from the vault and carefully restored the Enchanted Tiki Room soundtrack. They also installed new speakers and audio equipment in the attraction that produce a clear sound that surpasses fidelity limitations of the past.

“The Enchanted Tiki Room continues to delight thousands of guests every day, some 50 years after Walt originally introduced us to Jose, Michael, Pierre & Fritz,” said Jon Storbeck, vice president of Disneyland Park.

The California Grill's Chef, Brian Piasecki and general manager, Michael Scheifler recently went in search of the best of the best wine in the Napa Valley and Sonoma Vineyards for the California Grill when it re-opens.

“We visited 15 wineries in five days,” says Scheifler. “It was a whirlwind, but we came home with some great new discoveries.” Like Tres Sabores, a small, organic vineyard in Napa where they discovered a delicious zinfandel. And Heitz Cellars, where they are bottling magnums of chardonnay just for California Grill – it’s resting in the bottles now and won’t be ready until fall, says Scheifler.

“We’ll offer club service, where we will bring the magnum to the table to pour by the glass, a really fun presentation” he says.

The new display case is a showstopper as guests exit the elevator to the 15th floor, with 1,600 bottles on display in an onstage, climate-controlled, state-of-the-art cabinet. In all there will be about 250 wines on the list, and out of those, 72 percent will be from California. Another 22 percent is Old World wines and 5 percent New World wines.

“We’ll have something for every palate,” says Scheifler, “from a first-growth Bordeaux to a boutique wine from Oregon or South Africa.”

There will be 80 wines by the glass, up from 50 on the previous wine menu. And sommeliers will be there to help you select a pairing, with more than 20 on staff.

Scheifler is just as excited about the expanded sake program to pair with the expanded sushi menu, with 10 varieties on the list, from a light, sparkling sake to “cask strength.” And craft beer is back, with eight brews on the new menu, mostly from California.

“We can’t wait to debut the new beverage lineup,” says Scheifler. “Drinks span from classic cocktails to wines you won’t find anywhere else, the beverages are a great complement to Chef Brian’s new menu.”

The Great Irish Hooley returns for four non-stop days of incomparable Irish food, live music and fun at Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant in Downtown Disney August 30-Sept. 2.

Irish slang for a party or celebration, the Great Irish Hooley debuted in 2012 to such acclaim that it returns in 2013 with top Irish bands, music and dance workshops and Celtic fun for all in the family.

A lineup of celebrated Irish bands will play traditional, folk and rock tunes on the restaurant stage and outside on the pub patio. Families can participate in Irish dance workshops led by renowned Irish dancer and choreographer Ronan McCormack of the original Riverdance cast and join in Irish Music Workshops with distinguished Dublin-born multi-instrumentalist Declan Masterson. Guests also can kick up their heels during structured set dancing called the Ceili (kay-lee) — a precursor to today’s country line dancing. Celtic face painting and authentic food and beverages are on tap, as well.

“Last year’s hooley was such a success that we started planning early this year to invite the best of Irish bands and entertainers,” says John Cooke, a Raglan Road founding partner and native of Ireland.

Among the Great Irish Hooley lineup:

Scythian (sith-ee-yin) will play kicked-up Celtic and world music infused with a touch of punk-rock sensibility.

Lisa Canny, musician-singer-songwriter from Ireland’s west coast will entertain with traditional and folk music featuring her contemporary flair.

Elevation, the leading U2 tribute band on the planet, will rock the crowd with the best of U2.

During the celebration, guests can grab a table for authentic fare by Irish celebrity chef Kevin Dundon or belly up to one of Raglan Road’s 130-year-old imported-from-Ireland bars.

More information to follow.

Has anyone used airport assistance at Gatwick, Orlando or Manchester

We are flying with Virgin and Chris says I should make use of it this year. I'm not so sure as I think it's abusing the system. We are flying from Gatwick, but coming home to Manchester.

The main thing I am worried about is the wait when we get to Orlando, I use the handicap lane as I have been told to do that by a TSA officer who told me off (in a nice way) for standing in line  but I am hearing some really bad stories about the wait to get through immigration. Our Keith had quite a wait on his recent trip and there is just no way I will manage it.

The thing is I'm not the type of person to say excuse me and walk past people to get to the hall so I can use the handicap lane  so this is why Chris is saying I need to ask for assistance.

If I decide to, has anyone used Virgin's special assistance line and has anyone used this when flying into Orlando and if so what happens?
