Transfer files/programs from one computer to another

I think the title says it all, but what's the easiest way to transfer files and/or programs from one laptop to another. I have an external drive. I have been saving pictures, music, and documents to it. Would it be best to just do that then save them to the new computer?

I think the new laptop is coming with a transfer cable, would that help in anyway?

I would do like you have said, save everything to your hard drive and then transfer what you need. this is how I do things.
The only problem you might have with do it this way is the administration files for your software may not transfer. ????

Re: Transfer files/programs from one computer to another

If you plan to get rid of the original computer you can just unplug the external and plug it into the new machine. Otherwise there is software available to assist you in doing the down load.
