Re: Just got an iphone, what apps do I need?
How does turning it off affect what my phone can or does, do?

Re: Just got an iphone, what apps do I need?
Basically, 3G gives you faster internet speeds. So web pages or email load faster because the data they're made of can be transmitted to your phone faster. But 3G takes a lot of power. So, turning if off saves on your battery.
How will it affect what your phone can or can't do? It won't. All that will happen is that webpages, email, maps, etc. will load slower. They'll still load. Just not as fast as they do when 3G is turned on.

... sometimes, slower is better!)

Re: Just got an iphone, what apps do I need?
PLUS, as per verizons latest adverts, at&t has AWFUL 3G coverage which has two consequences
1. you wont lose anything by turning it off!
2. it'll be sitting there all day trying to find a 3G signal, perhaps half finding one, losing it again and so on. Using WAY more power than necessary and probably causing additional slowness in your interactions with the device
All in all, Tom's suggestion is a great one to try
(the other battery gazumper is GPS/location services but since you're using mapping applications you may not be so keen on turning that off)

Poor Energy Efficiency, anyone?
(Mark...
stealing Tom's catchphrase just this once, because immature humour is funny).

What's immature about it?
I like them both, and shall steal them with not one twinge of conscience!
I actually spent some time playing with the phone last night. I managed to get to iTunes and buy Giant!
Oh? That's not what ya'll were trying to teach me?
