Awesome sky watching
The inlaws live in the middle of nowhere. There is no street lighting past their house and tonight the sky is dead clear. We walked the dogs and I've never seen so many stars. Honestly you more you stared upwards the more stars came into your vision.
So....using my StarMap app on my lovely ipod touch this is what I identified before my hands froze.
Jupiter
Orion
Great Bear
Lesser Bear
Polaris
Dragon
Lyre
Swan
Pegasus
Cassiopea
Perseus
And...it was so clear you could see the fuzziness of the Pleiades Cluster with the naked eye.

I'm still buzzing.

Re: Awesome sky watching
Its amazing when it all fits together - you should have been able to see Taurus as well then - just under the Pleides

Re: Awesome sky watching
Not really it looked large as it was low down. It's called the moon illusion and you will still be able to cover it with your pinkie stretched right out at arms length. It's amazing what the brain does. We ended the year with a blue moon. Which just means two full moons in one calendar month. Which doesn't happen very often

Re: Awesome sky watching
It was fantastic. Really showed how much we lose through light pollution. With no street lights and just mother in law waving her little torch around we have almost perfect night vision and stars were just appearing everywhere. Probably did see Taurus but overwhelmed with excitement at what we could see so didn't note everything.
Had Orion on one horizon and then spin 180 degrees for the Plough on the other horizon. Those two I already know. You could fill in everything in between using the map on the ipod.
