After 30 years in operation, Disney closes Miramax
After purchasing the studio in 2005, Disney announced today they were closing down Miramax effective immediately and with it, 80 jobs. The studio, which had been in business for over 30 years, was purchased by Disney from the Weinstein brothers in 2005, and was credited with such Oscar-winning hits as Pulp Fiction and The English Patient
Founded in 1979 by producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, Miramax was named after their parents Max and Miriam. Miramax joined Disney in 1993, it wasn't until 2005, when Weinstein brothers quit to form the Weinstein Company, that Disney took over fully.
It's closure today came as no great surprise as it had been forshadowed for some time now. Still, it leaves six films in limbo including John Madden's "The Debt" and "Last Night" starring Keira Knightley.
