Re: yes it's a Mac question
yeah the thing is, avi is really a container meant to bundle up video/audio inside it for ease of transmission.
So the AVI output from your astro stuff could contain one, very editable format whereas Dawn's software could well be hiding an incompatible format inside it. If I had to guess, I'd say probably DIVX or some often used PC codec like that.

Perhaps Perian could help.

Like Keith said, it depends on what's in it but it might be worth a try.
Download and install for free from this link:
Perian
I've got it and use it. Never had a problem.

Re: yes it's a Mac question
Well we finally did it. Took 3 geeks, 1 laptop, 1 external hard drive, 1 night with external hard drive at a geek house (not mine) using specialist software to convert the files to something the stupid macs would read and a whole lot of wasted time.
And the 3 of them still shut down imovies when they feel like it. One of them crashes completely at least 3 times a day. One of them the mouse decides to stop working when it feels like it - usually in the middle of something really important. And the hardware is no good for a classroom - mouse dropped on to carpeted floor once and it needs replacing because the stupid blue tooth is so sensitive if you click it too hard it sulks and refuses to work.
We have them for 1 more week and then they are leaving our classroom forever. I'm throwing a party. Things were more trouble than good.
