You have a username that you can give out to your friends and they can send you little instant messages. You can also send files in the newer version, too It's a really good way and often quicker than texting. It uses push notifications so you get a little alert the same as you would a text whenever you get a 'ping'.

I prefer whatsapp because a lot of my friends have blackerrys so I can speak to them also. It's also done by your phone number so it automatically adds anyone from your address book that's got whatsapp. It's something like £1.59 to buy.
