Re: New Macbook Pro's announced - redux
Morning folks!
Satan-Apple-Pimp here.
The time has come the warus said,
to speak of many things.
Of airplane floats, and flying boats,
And other things with wings.
(With apologies to Lewis Carol)
Well, it finally happened. I guess I jinxed myself (or was that janxed)?
My DW's trusty old 15" Macbook Pro hard drive died yesterday. This is so old, it's one of the IDE drives. I managed to get it out of the computer thinking I had a spare that I could use. Alas, no such luck. It turns out that all the spare drives I had lying around are SATA, not IDE.
So, I had an enclosure that would take it so stuck it in there and managed to save 99% of her data. Only missed a few system files. But of course, the things not bootable. Anyway, looked around trying to find anyone locally that had a stock of old IDE drives.
Do you think I could?
Nope.
Not a chance.
So, rather than wasting anymore time trying to hunt down an IDE drive to put in it. Cheap though they may be. I've decided it's time to give the thing a proper burial, say a permanent good bye to the PowerPC architecture, and spring for a new Macbook Pro. 17 inch thank you very much. Fortunately, my company has a buying agreement with Apple so I get a bit of a discount.
Now, the only question is, who gets the new one. Me or my DW? What do you think the answer will be?

Re: New Macbook Pro's announced - redux
No! I didn't do it! It wasn't me. You can't prove it!

Prolly just go with the standard 17" model.
2.2GHz quad-core
Intel Core i7
4GB 1333MHz
750GB 5400-rpm1
Intel HD Graphics 3000
AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 1GB GDDR5
Built-in battery (7 hours)
I'd really like to have the 500GB 7200 rpm drive but that's a build to order option and I don't really have the time to wait. Gotta buy off the shelf so to speak in order to promote domestic tranquility.
Got my firewire external hard drive built with Snow Leopard and my DW's applications, files, settings, etc. So, once we get the new machine this afternoon, it should be a relatively simple process to use the Migration Assistant to move everything over.
Wonder which machine I'll end up with? New or old?

Re: New Macbook Pro's announced - redux
Has to be new doesn't it

Not tempted by the matte screen at all? Ive got the glossy 15" of course and it's great but I always wonder if I should spec the matte. The great thing about the 17 is there's really not much chance of options because everythings built in

Re: New Macbook Pro's announced - redux
I don't know. I've got the matte on my current MBP. From what I've seen, the glossy isn't as bad as I once thought it was. So, we'll go with the glossy this time around. For stuff like pictures it's actually better. How well the glossy will be while in XCode remains to be seen.

Re: New Macbook Pro's announced - redux
I spent hours at the apple store looking at both last time I bought the 15 and in the end decided to go for glossy.
Absolutely no problem with it at all and of course my imac 27" is glossy too, no option there!
