Any advice for which travel insurance to get?

I cant remember what we bought last time but it was before all the days of ash clouds and things.

Is there any travel insurance that we know is good these days or should be avoided?

It's very difficult with insurance, it's the same old story I guess, you don't know how good they really are until you need to use them.

With most policies, if you have the policy before something happens, normally 7 days, then you will be covered so if there was the ash cloud problem after this date then you would be OK.

I would just shop around for the best deal you can get, friends just got a good deal from Tesco Insurance. I use Columbus because I have pre-existing medical conditions, but they do standard insurance as well.
