Statue of Liberty and backpacks

The following is taken from the official Statue of Liberty website....

Large bags are not allowed on Liberty or Ellis Islands
Backpacks, strollers and large umbrellas are not permitted in the Monument.

Anyone been before who can clarify how big a 'large bag' is?
DH keeps his camera and lenses etc in a backpack....would you be able to get away with carrying this by hand

I know the statue will still be closed when we visit but we are getting the ferry from Battery Park, getting off on Liberty Island, then getting off again at Ellis Island.

not sure on this one izzy dave took his camera bag last time 5 years ago but it want as big as his back pack bag he has now so will be watching this with intrest.
just on another thing we can book our ground zero tickets next week have you booked your yet?

Yes we have, although I have no idea of how long we will be at SoL and Ellis Island which we are doing in the morning followed by Ground Zero. So, it was a very loose guess for the time!
