I actually found the explanation quite interesting! I'd never heard the expression before, and although I was kidding when I asked about Larry, it's nice to see there is a bit of an answer.

Happy as a Lark. Happy as a clam. Happy as a pig in mud. I've heard all those, but never Happy as Larry.
