The Christmas party is great fun, we were there for Christmas Day last year.
It was held at the Newport Bay Hotel and consists of lots of food, lots of drink!! and the characters all come out between courses and you can go up and join in with them for photos and greetings etc. Very manic but brilliant.
We were in there for about 3 hours which with a 5 year old and a 1 year old is testiment to the entertainment on offer.

Re: cheapest way to go to dlrp?
We are lucky to live about an hour away from ashford so always favour going by euro star, it takes you straight to the resort.
If you book as a complete package I think you can add something one where you check in at the train station. That way they take your suitcases to your hotel and that then gives you the option to go straight into the parks the moment you get there (this is an extra cost sometimes)
I believe you can get the train from London so if you have the patience to get the train from where you live into London possibly worth doing.
I suppose if you did the euro star you have to work out the costs of the flights, baggage check in and airport transfers to the cost of the euro star. From Kent the euro star takes 2.5 hours and you are in the heart of the resort.
