Car seats

This is a question from a cousin, she is going next May with her four and half year old son,
she is wondering what the law is in Florida for children car seats,
Travel agent has told her she doesn't need one but hire company have said she does.
can anyone help please.

Here's the Florida statute on the subject:

(1)(a) Every operator of a motor vehicle as defined in this section, while transporting a child in a motor vehicle operated on the roadways, streets, or highways of this state, shall, if the child is 5 years of age or younger, provide for protection of the child by properly using a crash-tested, federally approved child restraint device. For children aged through 3 years, such restraint device must be a separate carrier or a vehicle manufacturer’s integrated child seat. For children aged 4 through 5 years, a separate carrier, an integrated child seat, or a seat belt may be used.

Basically, for a 4 1/2 year old, the seat belt complies with the law. Although the child should be in the back seat. However, the FHP child safety brochure indicates that children of that age should have a booster seat. This allows them to be in a position where the seat belt can fit best.

We went last year and brought a trunking booster seat. It was great because it doubles up as a rucksack, so we packed all my sons stuff for the flight in it. Then when we got to the hire car it was ready to just put in the car.

We once flew with our full size car seat (thinking, in part it would be more comfortable for the boy on the plane). NEVER again. What a miserable experience that was! A booster seat, maybe but never a full size car seat again.

The item you describe sounds really neat! Not sure I can picture it, but it sure does seem travel friendly.
