Checking deals for flights

How do you guys usually check for the best deals on flights?

Do you use a comparison site, check directly with the airline etc. Are there only certain carriers you'd fly with or do you go with the cheapest deal? In your experience is it best to book early or late?

I do all the above. I check sites that claim to have the least expensive flights, then compare those flights with the airlines directly.

I've found that for the most part, the earlier you book, the better. Not always true mind, but anymore for the most part.
