photo id?
Do lots of places need photo id? a girl I work with said that they were always being asked for photo id?
I dont have a photo drivers license so that would mean taking my passport everywhere. Would a photocopy do?

No, if someone asks for I.D. for any reason it will be official. Depending upon where you go, you may be asked for I.D. if you purchase an alcoholic drink, use a credit card, or use a personal check.
