Yes I-Pods bought in the US will work fine in the UK. They are charged via the USB cable connected to your computer...which is a universal cable so no worries there...I've *read*, not sure of the validity, but I've read that the volume goes higher on the ones you buy in the US vs the one's in the UK....
Only other advice I'd offer is to be aware that accessories bought in the USA that require a power cord will have a U.S. plug and not a UK 3 pin plug. So you might want to wait until you get back to purchase those.
