With the fastpass scheme can you have more than one at a time or is it blocked out until one expires?

is there some kind of special entrance where your ticket is checked or something?

There are special fast pass entrances. You can get one during a certain amount of time. I think it is about 3 hours. Check the bottom of the ticket.

I can tell you the most popular rides to get a FP for is Soarin at Epcot, Expedition Everest at AK, Any of the mountains and Peter Pan at MK, Rock n roller coaster at DHS.
