Wds Question Icon Opinions on Netbooks/Webbooks please...

Has anyone had any experience with these?

I'm very tempted to buy one but would like to hear any comments you may have first

I think it very much depends what you want one for.... I couldn't cope with the small keyboard and screen though I COULD see the point having such a small device for travelling.

They're often pretty locked down as well limiting what you can do with some of them

Most of them seem to have Linux as the OS. I've no experience with Linux but have heard it's reliable.

The size appeals to me Keith as I would use it when travelling

Well it's the perfect OS for them because it's free and has a very small footprint!

To be honest though, these webbooks from what I've seen, dont really let you get at linux easily. They tend to have a simple menu offering you web/email etc. and thats pretty much what you get to do with them!

Yeah, it's reliable, fast and pretty much spot on for those devices but it does limit your ability to run some windows apps you may like to run (without emulation which they dont seem to include)

The size appeals to me Keith as I would use it when travelling
yep agreed! cant argue with that at all

I kinda thought I'd stick to ones which have Windows XP as that's what I'm used to. But that does seem to limit my choice

I'm looking for speed when surfing, email and open office. Don't need to do anything fancy really. The speed when surfing is probably the most important and of course the size for travelling

WELLL now youre really talking. If you dont NEED any windows only apps, linux ones will be cheaper, more memory available and faster on the same hardware. So if you just need to surf/email/open office, I think you may as well stick with the linux ones

      Re: Opinions on Netbooks/Webbooks please...

Well I now have a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Netbook and I love it!

It does everything I want it to do so I can't complain really. It's so portable and the battery life is over 4 hours and Linux is fab!

One of the criticisms of this model was that some of the keys were too small but that doesn't bother me at all. I have small hands

Can't really complain but then again, I just wanted something portable for surfing and email and it does that no problem
