Christmas for us too. We don't really like the dining plan, free or not (well not REALLY free since it forces you to buy at rack rate)

Re: which month to choose?
I personally prefer the October time frame because of the EPCOT Food and Wine Festival, with the Christmas season running a close second. Have never used the free dining.

Re: which month to choose?
Ooooh, tough one. My two favorite times of year! I'd say, if you were willing to come during the very hectic Christmas season (although the weeks leading to Christmas are not as busy as the week of) and plan accordingly (longer lines, ADRs for any table meal, etc.) I'd say Christmas.
It's an incredible time to be here.

Re: which month to choose?
Early to mid-December is my favourite time at WDW. Just watch the rates--the dates for holiday season change annually.
Second would be Halloween, although I'm not particularly interested in MNSSHP. But it's a shade cooler than September.
Probably never will try September/early October again. It's still too humid for these dry, desert bones!
