is better to book early or late?

I keep being told different things

some people say book early and all done but others say I'll miss out on late bargains

Do flights tend to go up over time or down?

From my experience, in these times prices for flights go up as time gets shorter.

When you see a flight price you can live with, book it. Check with your carrier, the ones I use (Southwest and Airtran) will give you a credit if the price lowers.

If you can afford it - book it! Simple as that. I really don't think that the big deals on late bookings exist anymore in this day and age. In past years you could get great deals on cheap flights but it is not viable with the price of oil, instability of financial markets, carbon footprint issues etc...

I am not sure there is a hard and fast rule, we have booked with Disney for next September to get the free dining, but I will wait to book the flights until I see a price I am happy to pay.
