My Trip Report for Jan. '09: Saratoga Springs Resort

This is my second part of my trip report. I am going to do it on the place we stayed, Saratoga Springs Resort.

As you know this is a DVC resort. And it is huuuuge! Check in was crazy, so many people! But I think it was due to the marathon. There were no real marked off 'line' area so it was pretty confusing. The check in area is nice but nothing that stands out to me like in a lot of other resorts. We got our room as soon as we checked in & I was able to get a DTD view & close to the DTD walking path as I had requested. Congress Park is the area we stayed.

We got a 1BR which has the full kitchen which we only used this time to store milk & drinks basically. Normally we always make one meal while there & have an evening in & the family will eat together & watch a Disney DVD. We just never made it to the grocery store this time. The washer & dryer in the room are fantastic! It allows you to pack less & wash whenever you need. I love that part of it. And our view was of the Cirque tent & the House of Blues & Virgin store. I really liked it except for the Saturday night bass thumping sounds that kept me awake until 2am But it was only that one night that it was a problem.

The kids & David only got to swim once, the day we arrived, at the main pool. That day was in the 70's & the warmest of our stay. The pool at SSR is very pretty. I think it's more subtle in it's design than a lot of other resort pools. The slide is nothing fabulous but still fun, Paige must have done it 30 times! The two girls did the quiet pool once. They were not impressed, lol. They require a slide I suppose. It did have a lovely view of the water way & DTD. Off to the side was a playground too.

The walkway to DTD, from where we stayed, was very short & much easier than waiting on a bus imo. You also had a choice of a boat which I didn't realize until halfway thru our visit. We decided to do it one night when it was 39 degrees!! May I suggest that no one else try this!~ hehehe Actually it was one of my funnier memories from this trip because we were all huddled together & laughing & joking about how cold we were. I do love the boat rides but prefer the weather to be a bit more balmy than 39

The food court, Artists Palette, is not impressive at all to me. We didn't eat there even once. We are just not into the type of food they offered. The flat bread pizzas are good but I think we were all still burned out on those from our stay at the Poly in July. The gift shop & grocery area is all mixed in with the food court which makes for not much of a selection of anything. Why is it the best gift shops are in the moderate resorts it seems? This one was really bad.

The viewing area for the future DVC resorts is at SSR & we walked thru that. Very cool! We got to see the new rooms for AKV & for the new Contemporary rooms. They are going to look a little different than the usual layout. I really liked it, especially that the 1BRs have TWO bathrooms!!

SSR is a lot like OKW to me. Both are very different from the other WDW/DVC resorts in that you don't really have this central lobby you come into & it's set up more like a huge condo neighborhood than a hotel. I think that the differences have their advantages & disadvantages. The biggest advantage to me is that once you step off the bus you just feel like you are a world away from the crowds & such because it's sooooo spread out! I just don't get that feeling at, say, BCV. A lot of people I talk to are turned off by SSR but I say give it a chance. This is our second time staying here & I really like it a lot. The theming isn't as 'WOW' inducing as places like WL or AKL but it has it's charms & appeals

Re: My Trip Report for Jan. '09: Saratoga Springs Resort

We've stayed in the Congress Park section too! It is a nice resort, for the most part. I'm with you on the food court area. What is up with that anyway?

We've not tried the Turf Room for a meal yet (since it's opened a restaurant) but would like to one day. We used to enjoy relaxing at the Turf Room before and can't imagine not still liking to.

It's a great place for walking, isn't it?

Overall, we prefer OKW to SSR, given the little larger rooms/villas at OKW and because it is our home resort. We have a bit more familiarity with it so that gives it the edge.

We'll stay at SSR when we get the chance though. Like it far better than BWV which is our very least favorite DVC.

Isn't it great though? Disney has all sorts of options so if you don't like one you can simply choose another one you find more appealing.

Nice that you were given your preferred location.

COLD!!!! Yikes! I'd not want to be on the water with temps of 39 degrees!

Thank you for another nice report!

Re: My Trip Report for Jan. '09: Saratoga Springs Resort

I'm not sure what is up with the food selection there but it's horrible. Only on the last day did I notice the sign in the elevator that showed this fabulous looking desert, a chocolate volcano thing I believe & I looked closer & it was an ad for the Turf Room bar & grill. I didn't know "grill" was part of it! Said they had burgers & fries & I think steaks! Wish I'd read the advert. sooner, we would have tried it out.

I prefer OKW over SSR too. The rooms for obvious reasons & I just like the main area better as well. I like the cozy check in area with the couches & bookshelves & stuff.

Re: My Trip Report for Jan. '09: Saratoga Springs Resort

Yes, the check in area at OKW is much homier and warmer in some ways. SSR is more like a paddock, eh? Well, that is what it's supposed to be emulating.

SSR is still a lovely resort. We moved there after the Poly this past August and felt like we were in a mansion with the one bedroom after the Poly's concierge level room! LOL.

The food at the Turf Room sounded good (we read a menu somewhere). We will try it one day. It's pretty quiet there as far as we've seen (we stop by to nosy around from time to time).

Oh! And aren't the AK and Contemporary villa models something else!!! Can't wait to stay at both of them. Really liked the looks of the Contemporary. It was such a change from the usual DVC. Kind of put me in the mind of the old cartoon, the Jetsons.

Oh I fell in love with the new rooms! Like I said, having 2 bathrooms would be fantastic! Plus I liked how they were layed out a little differently. Oh, & the studio at the Contemporary with the seperate kitchen area now, very nice. We've stayed in the AKV in one of the converted rooms & it was nice but nothing like this. Did you see the showers in both ? They were beautiful. I could spend some serious time in either one!

Oh yes! They are super neat, aren't they? I am really looking forward to trying both of them out when the opportunity arises.

I bet it's going to be wicked hard to get into those places though. Especially the Contemporary.

I'm the most excited about the Treehouse Villas. I was told that they are going to go for the same as a 2br at SSR (as far as points I mean). That really excited me because I figured they would be Grand Villa based in points. They sleep 9 & there will be 60 units. I think those are going to be super-de-duper hard to get. But I'm gonna try very hard! I think they look awesome!

Loving reading your reports BT. I have always stayed offsite so can compare it to nothing l know. But, it does sound great. Having a washer and dryer would make it for me. Sad as that sounds having 3 kids you need them.

I'd forgotten about the Tree Houses! I've wanted to stay in those since forever!

It will be cool to see them, too.

Sleep 9 eh? Well then...that leaves us room for 7 friends!
