Re: getting sea sick on cruise?

I was absolutely fine on the cruise and I can feel queasy on boats, I did take travel sickness medicine each day as a precaution.. I did feel the vibration of the boat for the first couple of hours especially as we were sailing out of the channel from Port Canaveral, as soon as we were out in open water and you start moving around the ship I completely forgot about it.

I slept better on the ship that I have ever done.

      What lisaw said.

Both my DW and I have been fine on all of our cruises and if anyone were going to be seasick, she would. We do take Dramamine II as a precaution. Usually, the first few hours out of Port Canaveral the motion of the ship feels more pronounced. But after a little bit, you get your "sea legs" and then you don't even notice it.

As far as sleeping goes, after our last cruise, I wanted to "can" the motion of the ship and bring it home. I figured if I could hook it up to our bed here, I'd sleep like a baby every night. Haven't figured out how to do it yet though.

Re: getting sea sick on cruise?

Herself is very sensitive to motion sickness, and has no problems on a cruise, even if there is some rough seas. She has been known to take a motion sickness tablet from time to time, but it's really not necessary.

You will find two trains of thought. Some folks will tell you to be in a stateroom with a veranda or window so you can see the horizon and that will assist with controlling the motion sickness (especially if you can get out to a balcony for air). Others (Herself included) will tell you that being as close to the center of the ship is the best. (More stable, less motion felt).

I think it may be individual preference and what works best for any one person's particular physiological make up, eh?

But all that to say, she can't be on a small boat on swells (whale watching is precarious!) but does perfectly fine on an ocean liner.

DCL [and probably other cruise lines] also try to steer clear of rough weather.
The DCL ships have 25ft. long stabilisers on each side of the ship which act as "wings" to lessen the side to side movement.

Yep, good point! The ships will avoid bad weather, which can result in a complete change of itinerary and ports of call.

I have Meniers Disease, so I was VERY concerned when Rick and I went on our Disney cruise with Donna and John. I never had a problem though! The ship is so stable it's like walking on land. Loved it!

Re: getting sea sick on cruise?

Oh it does happen, that's for sure. Not to start telling scary stories, but a hair dresser I once had (tiny town, small business) saved for 13 years so she could take her family on a cruise. She was terribly ill the whole time. 16 days (long cruise!) and every one of them was bad for her. Her family tried to get her to fly home, but she was hoping that it would pass. It never did.

She ended up calling it her 30 pound weight loss cruise. So sometimes, it does happen.
