      Flying in Plastercast?

We are due to fly on Sunday and last night one of the children going with us broke her ankle. Does anyone know:-

      1. Will the airline stop her flying
      2. If we have to cancell what will Virgin charge or refund.
      3. Any recommendations of what to do or expect if we do manage to go.

Everyone needs a hug in the morning
and one at the end of the day.
As many as possible squeezed in between
to keep lifes troubles at bay.

      Re: Flying in Plastercast?

You need to talk to her orthopaedic consultant to check it is ok for her to fly and also Virgin - you may also need a letter if the doc says its ok for her to fly.

sorry you are having problems mate

oh no poor thing, that's just one of the things you dread happening in the lead up to your departure - hope she'll be ok to go

      Re: Flying in Plastercast?

If the doctor approves, I wouldnt cancel...

She might have to take some medicine so her ankle doesnt swell, and I would recommend renting a wheelchair... if at all possible, rent it at home... that way she has a wheelchair for the airport and for the hotel and the malls or wherever you plan to go.

I was in a wheelchair or our trip in 03 and had absolutly no problems! on the contrary! people were extra friendly, and went out of their way to help.

Another thing to consider though, is that the heat also will make her ankle swell, so she must keep it as high as possible, and also, it will sweat, so bring baby talc to keep it dry....

I really do hope you can make it!

      Re: Flying in Plastercast?

      Update

Hospital say she has chipped a bone in her foot and has to go back to the fracture clinic tomorrow to see if a plaster cast is needed. They don't recommend flying with a plaster cast so we still dont know if we are having to cancel yet. At present her foot is strapped up and she is on crutches.

      Re: Flying in Plastercast?

      2nd update

Big sighs of relief all round. Hospital says only small chip but badly sprained. Her ankle is now strapped up (no plaster cast) and she has a letter to say she can fly. She will have to go with the crutches and maybe hire a wheelchair but she has 3 days to rest her foot till we go.
Her mum is now taking her home to kill her for what she has put us all through.
      Thanks for all your concerns.
I will take lots of photos to post.
