Wish there were more to do than post words to a thread, DisneyFreak. :( Sending you every good wish for strength for yourself (it's very, very hard having a family member go through such a catastrophic illness) and your Da. His personality of independence may see him well. Sometimes that sort of inner strength is the difference between making through a very hard time successfully, and not, eh?

We are all here should you need to vent, or simply escape the "every day" matters that can weigh one down.

Thinking of you, and hoping for the very best outcome.

That's what matters then, eh? You know that you have a whole family of folks here to support you as you walk this road with your Da.

I'm sad to report that my Dad passed away a week ago this morning at Winter Haven Hospital.

It happened way too fast. On 3.8 after his 2nd round of chemo he was getting hydrated every day and was feeling pretty good by the end of the week. Then Sunday he started not feeling good and then Monday morning my Mom couldn't even keep him standing and had to call an ambulance. He was in emergency most of Monday and then Monday night he was placed in SICU. Tuesday morning around 10:30 is when I got a call from my Mom. She was at the hospital and they needed my permission for a DNR since my Dad wasn't really coherent at the time. They had already called my Sister and she gave her permission. The nurse then told me that I should probably come up. So Stef and I left around 3pm and got there around 6pm.

When we got there he looked so frail. He was a little more coherent and knew I was there. I told him I loved him and he said he loved me to and called me "Sport" which was what he called me most of the time. We stayed with him, as I held his hand the entire time, until around 10pm and he was holding pretty stable. We told the night nurse to call if there was any change. She called the house around midnight and said he was having more difficult breathing. They put him on a BPAP machine which is a similar machine that is used for people with sleep apnea (like me). It pushes oxygen into the lungs via a mask over the nose and mouth so it's non-invasive as per the DNR guidelines.

This time we stayed at the hospital until around 5am and took shifts with him. Again he had gotten pretty stable and so the nurse suggested we go home and try and get some sleep since we were meeting with the specialist later in the day to go over options and make some tough decisions. Stef volunteered to stay at with my Dad. Well Stef called at about 7:45 and said that he is starting to go and we better get here right away. Unfortunately we didn't make it back to the hospital in time. Since my Sister hadn't made it down yet Stef had the foresight to call my Sister and she placed the phone by my Dad's ear so she could say good-bye.

The hospital believes his heart just gave out and that other organs starting shutting (kidneys) down from the aggressive chemo his doctor had given him. Ironically it was working because the mass had already shrunk after two treatments but my Dad was just too weak. He had just went through triple bypass December 2008. Nothing can ever prepare you for the loss of a parent. It has been hitting me in waves. At times I'm fine and thinking of all the good times and then other times I feel like it's a dream and that I can't believe I will never speak to him again or hear his voice or give him a hug.

We are going back to his house this weekend and picking up his ashes to have a private little memorial. My sister and her family are driving down from Chicago on Saturday so the memorial will be Sunday. We are going to scatter his ashes and then have dinner at one of his favorite restaurants (Kona Cafe) and then watch Wishes from the beach at the Poly. I think it will be a fitting end to the day and I know my Dad would have enjoyed it.

Here are a few pictures we posted from his online obituary guest book:
