My friend who is a salesman for the Aston Martin dealers in Cheshire told me that the "crackle" in the exhaust is caused by a flap in the exhaust system opening automatically at 2500 rpm or so.
He said that most of his customers ask the service dept. to take out fuse no 13 before they take delivery [fuse 13 being the one that controls the flap], so that they have that exhaust noise throughout the rev range!

He previously worked for many years at my Jaguar dealership and he told me that despite the hand built ethos of Aston Martin, the paint finish on Jaguar was FAR superior.

Yeah you cannot drive it in the low rev range if you want performance. Youo have to thrash a wankel and drive to the beep :D
