I have just promoted as a Advocacy Team Manager, and currently studying level 3 management with ILM.
i am wondering if anyone here is a manager and could suggest any books or materials that would be useful in my new role.
Well, I've not read anything in some time, but when I was a new manager I read, "The One Minute Manager," and "Seven Habits of Highly Successful People."
For the most part I've found being clearer than you thought you'd need to be with giving directions, putiting specific time frames on everything, and being completely respectful of your team members are keys to being a good manager.
I expect the work to be done on time, and well, but in turn I understand when personal difficulties crop up (and they will). I never reprimand a team member in a public setting, always private.
I never ask them to do something I won't do myself.
I thank them often for doing a job well. I want to thank them more often than object, eh?
Congratulations on your promotion! You'll be a great manager!
Sorry I can't help with the books Jeff but I had to say well done and good luck with everything
