in camera jpg is a very blunt instrument. Once you get your raw workflow sorted, and even that sounds harder than it is, you'll think of all the photos that could have been better/sharper and go DOH!

That's really the thing about RAW. You give yourself a digital negative with all the capabilities of the camera/lens you used at the time. You can of course convert it easily and quickly to a jpg but you can't go from a jpg back to a raw and get anything more than was there in the jpg.

Ponder the advances in image processing that happen all the time. Today's average photo could be tomorrow's WOW shot but you're going to wish you had the very best digital file to play with

True but that seagul, if you had processed in RAW would have been outstanding. Just try it on a couple of photos to start with. Anyway compared to the price of your kit how much are a couple of memory cards?

What Keith and Brit are saying about RAW is true. I once heard it expressed this way:

Shooting RAW, the ONLY thing you can't change on the computer is composition. Other than that, you can change practically everything.

Need more saturation in some colors? Go for it. Wish you had bracketed the exposure? No problem, crank it up or down by +1, -1, whatever. Change the white balance. Not to values like "daylight", or "indoors", but to a specific value that you choose!

It's kind of like going into a old film darkroom with your negative and doing all the things you used to do in a darkroom on the computer. Or at least it gives you that capability.

Basically, you've got almost every variable except composition there for you. And with no loss of quality.

With jpg, the more times you edit it, the more picture you lose!

    Try RAW, you'll amaze yourself!

You could always shoot RAW and JPEG too! But that'll probably send you into a tailspin lol
