    Hi,

So far I have hand picked three possible cars to exchange my Smart car....

    1. Golf (02 plate 1.6 SE)

    2. Ford Focus 1.6 Ghia or 1.6 Zetec (03)

    3. Nissan Almeria 1.6 SE (03)

    Any suggestions?....

well I still preferred the bmw idea but out of those...

golf overrated and will command a better price than it should because of the name. It'll work though.

nissan will be reliable but boring

The ford will probably be the bargain. The focus is "just a car" in every sense. They know what theyre doing and in every area the focus just works. It's kinda plasticcy but you can tell it's the result of many years making cars so although nothing about it will likely WOW you, nothing about it should annoy you either.

So the golf will likely be the emotional choice, the focus the thoughtful choice.

I disagree that the focus is 'just a car' :) I think they are superbly made and have excellent hadling and a suberb chassis for the price, I think Golfs are overated, but itsa very subjective thing.

Personally I would definitely test drive them all and go with what makes you happy

Well I kinda meant "just a car" in a bit of a positive way. I'm an admitted car snob but if I had a xK to buy a car and 5 minutes to decide, I'd choose a focus. Although none of the ones I've tried have wowed me with handling and so on, they have all been utterly robust and did exactly as I'd expect from them. I truly regard a focus as an utterly safe bet

Ach its only cos my Dad worked for Fords so I had a long succession of them, I was genuinely impressed with the handling and grip though compared to anything else in its class

We've had loads of fords, i've got a cmax at the moment but had that shape focus before, I feel very safe in them , I was shunted in it into another car and it seemed to bounce! My next car will either be a focus or fiesta, boring maybe but very practical.

DW has had a line of fiestas. I've offered other cars but she won't have any of it, she wants her fiesta.

We were moving house once and I, in mega stressed mode, reversed a rather expensive bmw into her rather cheaper fiesta and as you say, the fiesta seemed to compress and expand like a cartoon car the bmw immediately had hundreds of pounds worth of damage (which is just utterly par for the course)

Another thing in favour of the Focus is that the suspension was designed by Lotus.
