When we got home, out Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt!

Last night I went to bed with leaves still on the trees and woke up this morning to discover they're all stuck to my car.

yeah well, we lived in a hole at the base of a tree. We had to share with the squirrels, they can be very nasty when you try to eat their nuts!

We had to sew the leaves together with blades of grass to use as blankets. The needles were whittled from wood. Pillows were a pile of moss if we were lucky enough to find some.

We didn't work but collected leaves for new blankets, twigs for the fire, nuts and berries for our tea.....whatever the weather, rain, snow, ice.

Dad didn't even have a belt to thrash us with.
