    Today, 9th October....

    1919: Walt Disney, who has served as a Red Cross volunteer in France, arrives back in the United States. Aboard the SS Canada, he pulls into New York Harbor after a long slow trip. (Walt will be discharged the following day and arrive back in Chicago the day after that.)

    1956: Walt Disney pens a letter to the future (to be placed in a time capsule) from his Burbank, California studio entitled: PREDICTION OF ENTERTAINMENT IN WORLD 50 YEARS FROM NOW. He predicts that the world will be overturned by technology.

    2001: Disney re-releases its 1937 classic Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs on DVD.

    2003: Actress Julie Andrews takes a spin on Cinderella's Golden Carrousel as five members of television's "The Brady Bunch" make an appearance at Disney-MGM Studios as part of Disney World's Magical Gatherings celebration. (They joins dozens of celebrities this weekend who are
    helping Disney World open new attractions and shows.)

    Epcot closes at 3:00 pm for a special evening press event for the opening of Mission:SPACE. The dedication is presided over by Walt Disney Co. Chairman and CEO Michael Eisner, Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina and NASA President Sean O'Keefe. In attendance are legendary astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Jim
    Lovell and Wally Schirra. The event also includes beamed in remarks and well-wishes from Russian Cosmonaut Commander Yuri Malenchenko and NASA International Space Station science officer Ed Lu (who are both aboard the International Space Station).
    The B-52s perform on the Fountain Stage in Epcot prior to the evening's display of Illuminations.

    1996: Disney World's Pleasure Island holds its fourth annual "Jazz Fest." Top-name musicians headlining the event, include Jeff Kashiwa, Greg Karukas, Craig Chaquico and Keiko Matsui. Performances are held on the West End Stage, Hub Video Stage and in the Jazz Company club.

    1998: The Journey Into Imagination ride and the attraction Image Works, both located in Epcot's Journey Into Imagination pavilion, close for renovation.

    2002: The Walt Disney Company and Frito-Lay announce a new multi-year agreement by which Frito-Lay snack products will be featured at both the Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts.

    2003: The ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter at WDW’s Tomorrowland closes forever at the end of this day. It will be replaced with Stitch’s Great Escape.

    1978: It is announced that Mickey Mouse will be awarded a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame next month in honour of his 50th birthday.

    1998: The Disney World restaurant Key West Seafood closes. It will be replaced with Rainforest Café.

    2006: WDW Annual Passholders are invited to experience The Seas with Nemo and Friends, a brand new Epcot attraction.

    A set of stamps featuring Walt Disney and Disney characters is released in Portugal.

    1971: Life magazine presents an article on the newly opened Disney World in Florida. A colour photo of 1,500 Disney employees in front of the castle is featured on the cover.

    1998: Disney World’s newest show Fantasmic debuts at Disney-MGM Studios.

    1925: Jack Wagner, Disney Legend and the official voice of Disneyland and Walt Disney World, is born in California. He will work for the two theme parks doing park announcements until his death in 1995. Wagner’s work can still be heard today. He is also the voice of the Orlando International Airport’s Automated Guideway Transit System that shuttles passengers between gates 1-29, 30-59, and 60-99. The voice for the shuttle 100-129 is done by his son Mike!

    1967: Disney's 19th animated feature film The Jungle Book has its general release. Rudyard Kipling's classic tale of the jungle is the last animated feature personally supervised by Walt Disney (who passed away during the film's production). Directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, the film features the voices of Phil Harris as Baloo, Sebastian Cabot as Bagheera, Louis Prima as King Louie, George Sanders as Shere Khan, Sterling Holloway as Kaa, Bruce Reitherman as Mowgli and Clint Howard as Junior. The song "Bare Necesseties," written by Terry Gilkyson, will be nominated for an Academy Award.

    1995: Final paving for the track at the new Walt Disney World Speedway takes place. Despite 1995 being the wettest June-July in Orlando on record (75 inches of mrain), including Hurricane Erin, the construction has been completed on-time!

    2001: Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party premieres in Disney World for the first time this season.
