Had a lovely morning at West Sussex Falconry. Almost didn't find it as was looking for a business type place but the lady runs it from her house with all the birds in her garden.

Spent the first hour talking about falconry and meeting her birds, then we had a demo of the equipment that is used and how the phrase "feather in your cap" is derived from falconry :D and then we went into a field and flew a Harris Hawk and a Barn Owl. At the end of the day I got to carry the hawk back from the field to the house and was rewarded with a wing in the face.

Chris, yes Kestrels are territorial, as are most birds of prey but Harris Hawks will hunt in groups.

Oh and I asked about children doing the days with her and she said she has no minimum age but the child needs to behave appropriately - the youngest she's had is 5.

Photos - not best quality as light was poor and didn't want to use the flash. Also when we flew the birds it was so windy they struggled to fly so I struggled to find them in the viewfinder.

A hawk from Africa and I forget what it's called.

Hybrid falcon - the Americans are artificially inseminating falcons with other falcon pieces to make hybrids. She doesn't approve (nor do I) but the bird needed a home. And he is rather handsome.

    Peregrine Falcon

    Jake the Harris Hawk

    Smudge the Harris Hawk

    Eddie the European Eagle Owl

    Crystal the Barn Owl

    Kestrel whose name I've forgotten.

    Indy the Indian Eagle Owl

And another Falcon that I can't remember anything about.

This was the best I could do of the flight photos - this is Smudge.

I think I like the close up of the kestrel the best.

I want to go back but need to pay off christmas first. She does private courses for people with more than a passing interest.

Great photos Dawn! Don't tell but I am planning on getting my Mum something similar this Christmas. I'll be away for her Birthday so I will be sending her home a Disney package but this is something she's always wanted to do.
