My wife uses Ancestry.com as her main site I believe. She has been able to trace back a long way. I was able to find the male side of my father's tree and it went back hundreds of years to Europe.

It's something I'd love to do - even started to make notes for it a few years back but didn't go any further with it.
I'd still like to do it one day.

I use Family Tree software for my database. I use Ancestry.com and Rootsweb.com, along with other genealogy sites, to research my family tree.

It's amazing, Keith! I have a thousand or so members in my database, along with photos, scanned documents (birth, marriage, death certificates), and notes that I want to remember - stories, experiences, that sort of thing.

oh WOW I'd love to do that for my father's birthday at the end of the year. Wonder if I started now how much I could have done by then. Would be a great present

I've been researching for years. I talk with elderly family members to fill in holes, I visit cemeteries to photograph family graves, search county records and newspaper archives to uncover obits, birth announcements, etc.

My father's older sister gave me copies of her research (she's been researching for decades!) and I used that to further my own research. I even found holes and mistakes in her stuff and was able to prove it! I've even uncovered a few family skeletons tucked away in closets.

Not trying to discourage you - just the opposite. But I do want you to realize that it isn't an overnight thing. It can take lots of digging, begging librarians to search archives for you, and paying for documents - sight unseen - just to track down an elusive bit of data. But it can be SO rewarding!

Thanks Donna! I may well beg for help if I get stuck
