Walt Disney Parks and Resorts was honored by the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network with the FAAN Corporate Leadership Award for its commitment to food allergy awareness, education and management.
Vacations can be a challenge for those with food allergies. At Walt Disney World, lifestyle dining options, or for requests from guests with food allergies or intolerances, there are a wide range of choices, from kosher to gluten and sugar free. In 2009, Disney tracked nearly a quarter of a million requests for special dietary needs and allergies.
With a call three days in advance, Walt Disney World full-service restaurants can accommodate special dietary needs such as allergies to gluten or wheat, shellfish, soy, lactose or milk, peanuts, tree nuts, fish or eggs.
"Our parks in the U.S. alone accommodated well over 400,000 special dietary requests from guests last year," said Tom Staggs, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, who accepted the award.
"And while some places might see this as a challenge, at Disney, we see it as another opportunity to make a visit unforgettable."
The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network was established in 1991 to raise public awareness and advocate and education and research on behalf of all those affected by food allergies and anaphylaxis. FAAN's membership includes families, dietitians, nurses, physicians, school staff, and representatives from government agencies and the food and pharmaceutical industries
