Both my DW and I have iPads. I shared your feelings initially. So did my DW. But after having a play for a bit with various books, I've found that actually I do like it. Yes, I prefer having real paper in my hands but all in all, reading on the devices isn't bad. Just takes a bit of getting used to.

The one thing I don't like about these devices is the way user rights are enforced. For instance, if I buy a book for my iPad, and then want to let my DW read it, I've got to give her my iPad to read it on. I can't just give her the book. With a real book, once I've bought it, I can share it with whoever I'd like. I think eventually they'll get this kind of thing fixed. But right now, the licensing is a little archaic.

Must admit I love the ipad.

I'm a huge book person and never thought I'd want to read on a device but I've changed my mind. In fact, today I found myself not ordering a book from amazon because I realised I WANTED to read it on the ipad instead.

I read a lot at night and the ipad doesnt need a light on

I wonder if the rumours about a new colour version are true? I think that could be kinda cool especially if it has a built in light (or uses a tech that doesnt need one)

I'm okay with the non-color version. To me it's like reading a paperback book. I have the little light that you can buy and I use that when I need too. I guess I'm just simple.

I always keep the wireless portion turned off unless I'm downloading a book. Mine will last days and days. I'm really impressed with the battery.

It really depends on what you're doing. For the iPad, if you're just watching movies or reading a book, you can probably get up to 8 or 10 hours out of it. Doing anything that requires the radio (WiFi or Cellular) is going to take more juice so you won't get as much time.

There's loads of magazines, newspapers and such available for the iPad.

Not sure what you mean by "pictures". The iPad does pictures really well. Both moving and still.
