I would avoid both beaches on the weekend, well because it's the weekend.

Also during the US college spring break times would be bad too, in my opinion. That's usually around March, but at different times.

Let me just say that these beaches will always be busy, as they are very popular. Any weekday will cut down on crowds.

I may sound like a stick in the mud, but when I go to the beach I don't want to be so crowded that I could rub lotion on the stranger next to me because they're so close.

Sara, I would think a weekday would be better

The weekends tend to be busier anywhere you go.

Daytona and Clearwater are worlds apart though, we went to Daytona on our last trip and it was nice, we went to Ponce Lighthouse which was nice - although I wasn't able to climb the steps to the top (it's one of the few times I was glad my knees where bad) Chris got some nice photos though.

Clearwater is lovely and there is a lot more to do there

Also try to avoid the race weeks at daytona if you are not going specifically to watch them. I think around the nascar Daytona 500 (either the week before or after) they have a bike week as well.
Daytona is good if you want to drive on the beach
