Im reading this guide book thats saying we can go up there just to see the fireworks without booking a meal but am I right in thinking thats no longer true?

If not, where can we watch from?

I doubt this is true. I went to Cali Grill last year for dinner and watched Wishes from our table. The people on the observation deck were diners or those waiting to dine or had finished their meal and were sitting at the bar.

You are escorted to the restaurant/observation deck in the lift from the podium you check in at.

    yep things have changed

A good few years ago anyone just went up there, nightmare for the diners. Then they said you had to have a reservation but setup a viewing area on the 4th Floor of the Contemporary Resort at the North end of the resort, very nice and also had the music playing. Whether that's still there I don't know given all the changes as well.

Nowadays you have to check in and then you're escorted up in the lift with a cast member, so there are less chances for someone not dining there to get up there.
