Whether he's President or not (and thank the Lord he is again) I think Obama is a thoroughly decent guy. He's a natural. When I looked at Clinton all I heard was Wah wah wah after that blue dress debacle. Couldn't believe another word uttered from him after that.

I do however believe what Obama says... naive? maybe, but I would have voted for him if I could have.

Absentee ballots, over 20,000 in Dade County (Miami) alone.

Yeah I checked after I wrote that Tom. I was sort of quoting what I saw before I went to bed last night. Of course then Romney had about a 1 Million vote lead and led in electoral votes 153-143. Of course Ohio and Wisconsin weren't in the president's corner yet, though they were leaning heavily. I think the count is now up to something like 69 Million to 59 Million.

The amount spent on advertising is a disgrace. If congress wants to do something worthwhile, they'll enact caps for spending on all offices. Running for office must not continue to be about who is the richest and can spend the most money.

For me, Romney was a liar, at the best a spinner of verifiable data. Once he started making statements for which there were data to refute what he'd said, he lost all credibility. Then he started revealing his position on equal rights issues, women's issues, healthcare, Medicare (the federal insurance largely for the elderly) and job growth and I really shut down. I have relatives and many friends in Mass, too and not ONE Of them would support him.

For the record, and in the interest of being excrutiatingly honest, I was not originally a supporter of Barack Obama. I wanted Hillary Clinton to win the first Democratic Primary and was really worried when she didn't. I went on to support him as a lesser of two evils sort of choice. I've come to respect and "like" his work, but didn't start out that way.

I still think Hillary would make one heck of a President!

Mags, no this country is very insular when it comes to "news." The media here thinks it's more important to report stories about celebrities, movie stars, and that sort of trashy stuff than it does the global issues. I listen to the BBC on my way to work so I can keep informed with regard to some of what is going on in the world. We like to blame "the media" here in this country for everything. However, if we started turning off the junk news, and refused to watch that ****, instead demanded relevant information things would change.

Socialized healthcare is a topic that will cause people to actually froth at the mouth here. It's insane! People bash Obamacare as a true demon, yet refuse to understand (or perhaps acknowledge) that what they are bashing ALREADY EXISTS in the healthcare for profit industry. Insurance companies make all the health decisions, not the physicians. Insurance companies dictate treatments, care, testing, everything. Anyone who doesn't believe that has no understanding of the health system in this country. Personally, I think a good social system is a real need, and would benefit this country greatly. People here love to cite "England" and recite horror stories about how you "can't get the care you WANT." Wake up folks, you can't get what you WANT here, but more so you often cannot get what you NEED and that is the real sin.

    I'll stop ranting now (maybe :D ).

I would have to say that our NHS does occasionally have it's problems and from time to time things go wrong, but isnt that the case in any country? I dare say that the 'naysayers' made sure they dug up every story they could about the inadequacies or failings of our system to back up their case. However, I can tell you that 99% of voters (conservative, labour and lib dem) love and defend the system to the hilt. To me, it is eminently sensible that the money doesnt go through a third party and straight to the health system.
This year I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at our local hospital and then immediately was sent to Addenbrookes(Cambridge - which has the best cancer dept in the country supposedly and the best Medical students/staff as many are from the university). My scans, tests, pre op stuff all happened within weeks and before I knew it I had my op. Treatment started soon afterwards. I had my own room, excellent care, food etc and the follow ups have been of the same standard. I mean, what's not to like? I am paying from general taxation just as everyone else is. What is wrong with an element of socialised medicine which serves the whole populous?
Anyone who wants, can take out private insurance but that isnt the norm. We just do not understand why our health system is denigrated by some in your country. Is it that they are protecting an out of control insurance system? I am genuinely asking that question as I dont know the answer.
To be honest, every health system has it's problems/horror stories. There have been quite a few I can tell you from people on other holiday forums from the States too,(a nurse friend is one) but that is going to happen under any system. I do scratch my head over the opposition to a socialised system.
As an aside Tink, I dont know whether you have been following Donald Trump on Twitter over the past few days but it has been a joy to see him foaming at the mouth and threatening a march on Washington as 'democracy has failed'. I didnt see him making the same complaint in 2000! lol

    Donald Trump is a moron.

I am saddened and disheartened by the nasty and bold posts on Facebook. This morning I saw a picture of a tombstone that said the US had committed suicide :-(

And the more I hear people say they aren't racist is just reaffirming my belief that they are.

We are a country divided and it makes me sad :-(

Yep. I'd be willing to bet that a lot of the denigration is the result of marketing money spent by the insurance companies to protect their turf. Probably has nothing at all to do with how people really feel.

Tom (... and they wonder why health costs are out of control.)

As Abraham Lincoln once said "A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved I do not expect the house to fall but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new North as well as South.[1]"

The fact that our country is so divided is extremely scary. Admittedly, not in the same way that it was divided when he was president, but until congress can work together I fear that we are destined to fail. And it probably won't matter, in the long run, which man won the election if congress can't work together. Sadly.
