    Tim,
It depends on what feel you want to go. I walked Keith through this the other day via MSN which was interesting with one of my RAW images. With black and white it is a bit of a challenge. I use Photoshop mostly so it makes it a little easier.

I load up the image in Photoshop RAW. Under here I do Auto Exposure, and let Photoshop read what it needs to be. I play with the settings, mainly blacks and increase them, and normally the recovery just to capture a bit of detail. I also set the Saturation so the image is black and white (greyscale)

Open it in Photoshop and then create an adjustment layer with Levels.
(My levels eye droppers are set as Black (L: 5), White (L: 95)) - This is opened by double clicking on the eye dropper that is on the left which is black and the one on teh right which is white

I select the background which is normally black or dark, and darken it about by using the black dropper. Sometimes I just select roughly round the person with the lasso, and feather it slightly, so it has a grey edge so I can darken later. I then adjust the level slider to make it look right. I then create another adjustment layer, with Levels, and do the same again this time selecting the grey edge you can just slightly see where we feathered earlier.

Sometimes to boost contrast I then create a HUE/Saturation adjustment layer, and leave it as is. Set the blending options to Overlay and set opacity normally to 25% to 50% depending. Then if need be I burn a little.

Maybe I should write a tutorial. I hope this helps.

Here is an example of that technique, that is abit easier to show how it is done, due to controlled lighting.

    Thanks,
    Cj.

    Miss Becca,
It is a respect thing. A long long time ago in an Internet Provider far far away, he used to be my boss.
I have always referred to him as Mr K. Don't know why.
