I'm sorry about this but I need to get this off my chest

As some of you know I have advanced osteoarthritis and it has been very bad lately especially in my right knee which has stopped me from being able to walk and when I do walk I can't do it without crutches. It is really getting me down now I have been going to physio, which I have been paying for - 6 week waiting list on the NHS!! My physio has told me to go back to my doctor as she thinks I need to be referred to a consultant.

Well, I phone the doctors surgery at 8am this morning and was told all the appointments were gone and to call back at 1.30pm. I phoned at 1.30pm got the answerphone and redialed straight away. When I got through I was told that there had been 4 appointments and they were all gone. The receptionist said there were 3 for tomorrow morning and I could call at 8am for one of these.

I asked when would be the first appointment that I could book and it's the 27th March!!! This is just plain silly, I need to see a doctor now not wait a month. The NHS really is a complete waste of time

I just phoned to ask if I could see the consultant I saw last time but to pay privately and I was told I can't I need to be referred by my doctor

I give up, this is just plain frustrating, I am popping pain killers like they are sweets, I feel constantly sick because of it and no-one can help me

    Sorry for moaning

OMG Wendy. So sorry to hear you are having such a hassle. I can't believe that emergency appointments are so hard to get. Is this because you live in a small town or would it be that way no matter where you are in the UK. Hope you can get an appointment soon sweetie.

Wendy, I've said this before and I'm saying it again.... You need to change doctors! The way you are being treated is scandalous. If I was nearer I'd come and bang on a few desks for you!

John, the Health Service in the South West (Devon and Cornwall) is particularly bad :(

People refer to the NHS as a Post Code Lottery and that is true, depending on where you live seems to depend on what service and in some cases medication you get. I think it's bad in Plymouth, but people in Cornwall have an even worse time of it.

I know Diane, but I have a lady doctor now who is really nice, it's just a problem getting to see her.

I belong to Benenden which is a sort of private healthcare but it only covers certain things. I phoned them this afternoon and explained the situation and she said that if the waiting list is longer than 6 weeks to see the consultant then they will cover the cost for me to see someone privately. She said that it would include all tests and an arthroscopy if I need one, I need to be referred by my doctor though, so I'm still stuck in that regard.

    .
Try writing to her personally, at the surgery, and explain that you need to see her urgently.

I would normally let Chris sort it out for me, but he has enough on his plate at the moment I suppose I could ask for a telephone appointment.

I am so sorry that you are suffering so much with your arthritis Wendy. I am a little behind you with my symptoms, but I sure know where you are coming from. I have had it for about 16 years now and sometimes the pain is unbearable. The medication is brutal, isnt it, especially with the stomach problems it creates and the side effects. Have you been given gold yet? I feel very lucky being a patient at Addenbrookes in Cambridge as we get some of the best care in the country as the university medical school is attached to the hospital. I wish you all the very best in getting this sorted and getting the medical help and treatment you need. Take care. xx

    Sorry you are struggling Wendy

It's exactly the same here, you have to know about a month in advance that you will need to see a doctor!

We needed a private referral from the doctor because we were mucked about so much by the hospital appointment department and we were able to get this by calling our surgery and explaining and the doctor wrote one that we picked up - might be worth a try

    Thanks everyone

Mags I haven't tried gold, should I mention it to my gp or see what the consultant says.

Lisa, thanks if I don't get anywhere tomorrow, I will try for a telephone appointment, hopefully she will do the same
