I've heard recently that Silver Springs has really gone down hill in the past couple of weeks. The bear sanctuary has gone along with the vast majority of other animals. Shops have closed and the place has basically gone to ruin.

We were planning on spending a day there this summer so any ideas for an alternative within 90 minutes of the Orlando area. (Just pleased I didn't buy the tickets in advance!)

Don't know about how it is these days Diane, but when I was a kid growing up down there, our favorite spring was Rainbow Springs. At that time, it was a moderately commercialized place with the same kind of glass bottom boats and things you found at Silver Springs. Just not quite as "touristy". Now, it's a state park. So all the commercialization is pretty much gone. But it's still got the same things we went there for when I was a kid. Nature, swimming, canoeing, that kind of thing. Plus that incredible, cool, refreshing, crystal clear water.

    Tom (... still mostly underwater...)

We went to Silver Springs 3 or 4 years ago and it was pretty bad then. We didn't stay very long.

I'll take a look at Rainbow Springs Tom, thanks for the link.

I have often thought of trying to make it there, but I guess I won't now. I found this recent and quite interesting article.

I'm glad the park service is taking it over, it needs some TLC to bring it back to what it once was
