    Lens hood? Is that one of those little plastic bits that I see sometimes. They fit along the edge of the upper part of the lens? Rather like "eyelids"?

    Yeah kind of. They block light bleeding into the shot. Very handy under bright light conditions. The PRO lens' by Canon give you them as standard, not sure about the middle of the road stuff though.

    i got one with my tamron lens, always forget to put it on though
