Sorry about all the drama last week, I just really didn't want to talk about it and I got very close to hitting rock bottom :(

It's just everything piling on top of another I think

Anyway, I saw the consultant and we had a good long talk about the way to move forward, he finally agreed that he would push forward on the NHS for a knee replacement, but I would have to decide which one I wanted to have replaced because both was out of the question. He then said that he wouldn't do this for another 3 - 5 years.

He did explain the reasons why he is holding off, knee replacements were originally made for people between the age of 65 - 75 and for them the replacement was a new lease of life. Unfortunately, in my age group there is only a 55% success rate in women under the age of 57 and as I have severe osteoarthritis there is every chance that the tibia and femur will have bone degradation as well and this will obviously play a part in how successful the replacement will be. There is every small chance that it won't make any difference at all

We talked about other options, a partial replacement is not possible because of the wear on my tibia femur, the gel only helps a small minority of people and it is only available privately and very expensive, so in his opinion not worth me trying it. Cortisone injections, well I've tried them and they didn't provide any long term improvement. The only other thing he could try again is knee arthroscopy on my left knee and he said that the NHS won't allow me to have it so it would have to be done privately. I am lucky enough to be a member of Benenden and they will pay for some things if the NHS waiting list is too long or there are others considerations. Unfortunately they won't pay for knee replacement, I've already asked that question. Anyhow, my consultant said that if they will cover, then I will have to have an mri and xray of my knee to see if the arthroscopy will make a difference before we go forward too far.

I contacted Benenden and they said they were unsure if I could be covered as the problem is caused by osteoarthritis and they needed my doctor to write to them. So that's where I am with this, just in limbo waiting to hear. I had a very unhelpful lady on the phone who became the straw that broke the camel's back. I felt as if someone had just turned off the light at the end of the tunnel :( I am holding on to the fact that it might help - what I'll do if it doesn't I don't know, I guess I will cross that bridge when I get there.

I saw my gp this morning and all she'll write the letter and after I got upset she has increased my dose of antidepressant and give me some orlistat tablets to help me lose weight.

There are other things as well, but they are of no consequence so I won't drip on anymore.

Thank you for all your patience and caring - I hope you know that it's you that keep me going when I feel like giving up

I know this sounds crazy, but have you thought of looking into having it done in another country? People do that sort of thing all the time when their country won't do what they need done, or when it's too expensive.

I know it's a long shot, but would you be able to look into it and find out about it?

I refuse to accept that they are going to leave you nearly immobile and in constant pain for years. That's just inhumane.

Oh dear, this just isn't good. Is this the only consultant that you have seen? Could you maybe pay to see a specialist elsewhere and get a second opinion?

I have looked at the prices in different countries and the prices range between 12,000 and 24,000

:( Did you check South America? I know several people who have gone to Argentina (for instance) for surgical work. Brasil is another place...

The problem then becomes recuperation. :( If you were here, you'd have your own team of nurses :D :D who would cook for you too! But in South America, there'd not be anyone to stay with you. :(

How about acupuncture or some other sort of non-traditional medicine? At this point, anything might be worth exploring (well, anything that isn't too extreme).
