Ever since we moved in we've meant to do something about the decoration. It's kinda 70s'ish. Lime green bathroom suite, very pedestrian kitchen.... pretty boring safe wallpaper everywhere and that kinda paisley type carpet everyone had.

So.... do you decorate diy or do you always hire someone?

I don't mind hard work but I'm not a DIYer by knowledge :/ I wouldn't really know where to start other than google or a book.

DW is thinking strip all the wallpaper and go for neutral shade paint, more modern one colour carpet and probably pay for the bathroom to go all white but with some nice new furniture in there

Wallpaper stripping is not for the faint hearted! Every time i paint i end up with a shoulder injury so I would either get someone else to do it (Jon) or pay someone! I think it's quite expensive. Doesn't hurt to get some quotes though

I say leave it, everything is cyclical, so if you wait long enough it's bound to come back in style :)

Seriously, we've been through a number of redecorating/home improvement phases (inc a new bathroom) and although each time we've considered doing some of our own work, we've always ended up paying a professional. Simply put, with our schedules and limited knowledge - it's been worth it. Jon has done the odd project here and there, but generally speaking if it requires more than a weekend from start to finish, we hire it out.

I'd paint everything a neutral colour and have plain carpets.

We are in the same boat as you, my Dad was my decorator so we will probably have to get someone in.

That's not to say there's not a certain satisfaction in seeing a job well done that you've done yourself, there truly isn't. There's also no WORSE feeling than having a half-finished job hanging over your head every time you turn around.

yeah I can truly see that happening :/ I guess I was kinda hoping stripping paper with some heat device thing :D may not have been TOO hard followed by some paint then I could save the money for the stuff I'd have no real shot at

Jon's mom is an avid DIY'er and even she hires out wallpaper stripping. As BC said, it's not for the faint of heart-or the impatient (me).

The wallpaper stripper is hard work, there's so much steam and the scraping can be really tough.

Pete always says, why do it yourself when you can pay someone to do it for you. :)
Although we've had to decorate here ourselves, because we have no spare money.

I like his way of thinking.
