Every year I get the chance to be even more adenoidal and geekie than usual and mix with my peers at the Annual astronomy fesival in Herstmonceaux which is only 5 minutes drive away. The domes of the old observatory used to house the nations best telescopes - responsible for some landmark observations and research - but due to funding issues the place was closed. In recent years it has reopened as a science centre for kids and we often go for a day out there. Once a year for 3 days it is taken over by the astronomy world - lectures etc

Sir Patrick Moore always tries to attend to give a talk (for the US people he hosts the longest running TV programme in the world called the Sky at night which he has fronted personaly for over 50 years - he is foremost a lunar astronomer and was one of the first to map the moon.

The man is a legend and will spend ages chatting with anyone who passes - Thomas sent him a drawing last year and the disabled octogenarian replied the next day with a whole load of freebies and an invite to his house!

On family day there was a Lord present as well as the Knight of the realm

As Matthew went in costume they made quite a fuss (they were superb by the way - part of an offical garrison - Vader even spoke with a James Earl Jones voice and the stormstoorpers were taking orders it was awesome.

"you know ..... you would have made a much better son than that luke kid.."

Matthew turned rather quickly and had me arrested

Nice day! Even I know who Sir Patrick Moore is! It is wonderful to know that he is so approachable and supportive when interest is shown in his passion.

I'll bet Vader was thrilled to bits to have a mini version!

You're looking good Dad! The years are being kind to you.
