When typing, how do you get an accent or an umlaut over letters?

Under Windows hold down ALT while typing the appropriate number code on your numeric keypad to create characters with umlaut accent marks.

For Windows, the number codes for the upper case letters are:
    0196
    0203
    0207
    0214
    0220
0159 For Windows, the number codes for the lower case letters are:
    0228
    0235
    0239
    0246
    0252

    I managed it :D

MP if you hold down the 'alt' button on your keyboard and at the same time type in the numbers Simon said above nothing will appear until you take your finger off 'alt' and then the right letter will appear with accent.

OH! I think I see why for me. No numeric key pad as I'm on a laptop.

Mystikpiglit, hold down the key marked alt, and while you are holding it, enter the sequence of corresponding numbers (that match the umlau you want). It should produce the letter with the mark above it.

    Did that help?

Wen you are typing and you want to use a letter with an umlaut, instead of typing the letter, you hold down the Alt key and type the corresponding 4 digit number using the numeric keypad (not the numbers across the top of the keyboard) then let go of the Alt key and the letter you want will appear.

    So

    = Alt + 0196
    = Alt + 0203
    = Alt + 0207
    = Alt + 0214
    = Alt +0220
    = Alt + 0159

    = Alt + 0228
    = Alt + 0235
    = Alt + 0239
    = Alt + 0246
    = Alt + 0252<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->
    = Alt + 0255

    Hope this helps

Ah, that's what I am on too.

So Simon, any way on a laptop? (Bet you wish you'd never answered, don't you? )
