Woolworth's disappeared here in the mid 1980s for the reasons Keith said. They lost their identity and tried to become a discount store (Woolco).
It was a special treat to be allowed to go to Woolworth's on Saturday with part of my allowance and buy something. And if I was lucky, a root beer at the soda fountain!
We have a big shopping centre here in Bournemouth called Castlepoint. Prior to that it was called The Hampshire Centre named so when Bournemouth was in Hampshire. When I was little it was the biggest adventure ever to go to The Hampshire Centre and visit Woolco. I remember when my parents bought our first ever portable TV for the kitchen from there. After years of renting our TV from Granada I felt so posh to finally own our own TV, albeit a 14" one!

If ever there is a tomorrow when we're not together.......
there is something you must always remember.
You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.
But the most important thing is, even if we're apart...... I'll always be with you.
Winne the Pooh - A A Milne
A friend is a hand that is always holding yours,
no matter how close or far apart you may be.
A friend is someone who is always there and will always, always care.
A friend is a feeling of forever in the heart.
I remember buying a budgie in Woolies - that's how old I am.
They were always out of hippos though. :(
