My new Point & Shoot camera has a setting on it to shoot in B&W...I haven't tried it as of yet, but I'm curious...Is there a difference between shooting directly in B&W or simply recoloring (uncoloring?) to B&W?

Welllllll it all depends how the camera does its B&W. Most likely it's a desaturation or something pretty simple. There are a ton of ways to turn a photo to b&w in photoshop, many arguable much better than a simple desaturation sooooo the advice really is to try it and if they look great to you, stick with it! If not, shoot in colour and then use photoshop to convert.

Of course the other way to look at it is if you take colour in camera then convert to b&w on the pc, you have both versions whereas if you take in b&w in camera, it's then hard to get back to a colour version

    lovely photo, Mick, truly lovely...

Keith, what you said confirms what I was thinking and of course you read my mind on the "best of both worlds" argument for shooting in color...

I'll try it and see what I find :D

    Thanks!
