Siobhan, my brother was out of work many years ago and accepted a job with the county cleaning office buildings. That was during the Work for Assistance years (able bodied people were expected to work for their public assistance). Someone on public assistance worked for 10 days out of the month (where my brother worked every day but weekends) received more funding from the public coffer, and had free health care to boot. All in all, that person "made" more than my brother. It is very defeating. :(
