Has anyone been to the Alamonte Mall ? I've heard of it but no idea how far it is from the Disney area. Looking online though it seems to have all the usual shops, apple store and even a cinema attached. May make for a good day out

    Anyone tried it?

We've been, we went for Hollister and Abercrombie a few years ago, it's quite a drive and I don't think I would go again. It's nothing like the Florida Mall, much smaller.

No matter what don't be tempted to go to West Oaks Mall, it's horrible and Tink will kill you

oh wow really?? it looked like it had more on the directory but it's easy to misread... I mean I don't think there's anything there that the other malls don't have I just thought it would be somewhere different.

I really like the cinema at The Loop but it's hard to get DW to go back there, she thinks it's old and weird

Soooo west oaks mall, what's THAT like :D

Well I thought it was smaller

If you want to go somewhere different then, give it a go :)

West Oaks is scary, more so than the camera shop. I think there are lots of gangs that go up there now as well. When we went, there was hardly anyone in there, it was horrible, the car park was empty, we were worried that the car would get stolen

The camera shop is far better for safety than West Oaks. Seriously. It is a gang place now, and that includes the daytime. Not even sure what shops remain there. We were there once during Christmas two (?) years ago during broad daylight and left. There is no reason on earth to be there.

Altamonte Mall is nothing special at all, but it's smack in the middle of a shopping area and places to eat. It's a easy drive north on I4 (Yes, I know I4 runs east and west, but through the Orlando area it's NORTH! and south :) ) to the Altamonte Springs exit, and then a (true east now) on 436 (Semoran). If you are just looking for a new place to poke around, an afternoon there wouldn't be bad. Then, if you wanted the very best Fish and Chips in the Central Florida area you would leave the Mall (area) and head west on 436 toward Apopka. As you went along 436 (several miles) you would come to the Hunt Club Road intersection where there is a strip mall with a Publix. Perfectly rudimentary with nothing special to mark it except for the little restaurant, Fish and Chips. The owner there surely knows his fish, and surely does know how to fry! I don't care for the chips as they are the hefty thick cut ones, but many people do like those. When we want true fish and chips, that's where we go.

Then, you could backtrack to I4 to return to your villa, or carry on along 436 through tiny Apopka (and passing the best Dairy Queen ever :D :D :D) and take the 429 back south to the Disney area. It will give you an exit to the 192 (among other areas).

Hope that makes some kind of sense.

:mental: I didn't know that was down there.

Oh Keith the fish and chips are delicious. We loved them, probably the best we've had (until the weekend with Terry - that's another story  ) The chips aren't like our chips but they are thicker than fries. The fish is really really nice, I had cod and it was real thick pieces of cod with lovely white flakes. I couldn't fault it at all.

You will be asked if you want hush puppies or coleslaw, try the hush puppies, Chris did - they were different but I preferred the coleslaw.

It's another place we will be going every year as well as Yellow Dog  and it's all Tink's fault :D

As for the Dairy Queen, wow if you like ice cream you have to stop. I had something with peanut butter and it's the best I've tasted. I think Chris had a sundae of some sort but I can't remember. All I do remember is they were huge :D

You have to give it a try :D

The Dairy Queen has fast food choices too. We once ate there and had cheeseburgers. They were seriously good! Fast food yes, but prepared to order.

It's built up a bit since then, Robert. Mostly though, you're right. There really isn't anything too unique to recommend it.

This is a menu from Fish and Chips. Of course, they also have the chalk board specials and the fresh catch of the day that won't be on the menu. This is just an example. They have beer and wine, also. They may have a full bar, I simply don't recall.

Wow. That shop is waaaaaay south on 27. You must have traveled a long, long way to get to the Altamonte Springs Mall! No wonder you didn't find it worth it! :D

I like Webb's myself. Lovely ice cream and yummy fudge. I'm not big on fudge, but do like a nibble of the goat's milk fudge they sell.

There is a mall in Winter Haven. It's not much. Nothing worth going out of your way for. Depending upon the route you took, that could have been it, but Webb's would have come after Winter Haven on your way back to the Disney area. If you stopped at Webb's on your way to Frostproof, it would have been before Winter Haven.
